Q & A with Jack Macko

Question:

Where do you see your practice in five years? What kind of growth do you see Arke experiencing (both from a revenue and employee perspective)? What will the focus be? What is it going to take to get there?

Answer:

A couple of great words to describe us are niche and boutique. Yet, these feel too cliché. Marketing Technology is probably our best descriptor because it has been, and will remain our focus. Over the next five years we’ll maintain a mix of projects that include CMS, portals, CRM, web, application development, and integration between all of those solutions and technologies. We’ll also continue to work on projects outside of our wheelhouse. Sitecore will continue to be a platform we leverage. I don’t see our Sitecore projects slowing down!

Revenue and Sources

As far as our revenue growth goes, I see us continuing on our current growth path which would put us at $50M in five years. Reaching that number takes a mix of business and services. Today 95% of our revenue comes from services. This is changing thanks to some of the advancements we’ve made in FRM, and other products and plugins. In the next year or two we’ll be around 70% in services and 30% in products. Within the next five years we’d like to get to 50/50. I believe the 50/50 split is the perfect way to balance all the things happening in the world today. It’s really a great mix for a company. Our consulting practice naturally feeds ideas towards new products.

“Laziness and productivity are the mother of invention.”
Many products are suggested and it’s awesome when we have the opportunity to fund these ideas. Each new product gets us closer to the 50/50 split.

We eat what we kill. Enter Hidra

Hidra, is our internal time tracking tool. It’s really fast, and fairly simple to use. Most importantly, we’ve designed it in a way so that it can one day be packaged up and sold to our clients. Often times, when we are searching for a technology and can’t find an existing product or service that meets our needs and expectation, others too are looking for the same thing. Because of this we our building our products using consistency and best practices so they can graduate into a product we sell to the outside world. For example, we have created several plugins for Microsoft Dynamics CRM that are patiently waiting to be sold outside of Arke.

Digital Plumbing

I really like Scott Klososky’s focus on digital plumbing.  I think he’s a pretty interesting guy, who believes it is important to make sure you have a good technology foundation. You have to have solid digital plumbing in order to grow, and that’s what we are focusing on. SharePoint, Sitecore and CRM give us that digital plumbing foundation we need. After the foundation is in place, you can then strategically invest in add-on products.

How do we get there?

We can’t afford to have distractions.

To reach all these five year goals and predictions, we have to stay the course. We must continue to hire the brightest people in Atlanta, act consistently as a leadership team, and make sure our goals are out there and known. We need to keep the focus on our digital plumbing and continue to add products to our arsenal to achieve the 50/50 services and products mix.
