Culture Your Way to Success

CabinAs a successful organization, you must always be changing and striving to make things better. Arke just held its annual Fall Retreat, and that thought was in the forefront of my mind. It takes a lot of things to make a successful, productive environment where individuals feed off of each other to create a true team. It takes a certain culture. The culture at Arke is something that we’ve really focused on making great, and continually focus on improving it.

The Arke Fall Retreat is all about getting people to reconnect with the culture. The retreat is special because it allows celebration and a chance for people to learn about one another—to forge a deeper bond and understanding of one another. We rent several cabins in the mountains and go up for a couple days and nights. It’s challenging because it’s our 3rd year. Getting different groups to talk and hang out was a huge benefit the first year, but now it’s starting to feel the same. Our challenge is how we think about all the things going on in the business that effect people.  Moments change year over year. We have to take into consideration the employee that has been there for one year, and the employee that has been there for 10.

Ultimately, my key to culture is simple.  Everyone is held to an unwavering standard of honesty, trusting each other, working hard, being humble, owning their job, and being authentic. When you make this the expectation and then get out of the way to let people do their job, magic happens.  Sure there are moments where people goof up in their job or fall short of those standards.  But we will always turn those moments into learning opportunities because helping each other grow as people is what creates the culture.  It has everything to do with mutual respect for each other’s contribution to the team and celebrating that as often as possible.

Want to challenge your Marketing, Technology, and any business in-between to achieve more and really enjoy what they do? Focus on these culture-centric aspects:

  1. Make sure employees know what is expected, and hold each other accountable.
  2. Don’t micromanage, as it shows a lack of trust.
  3. You can start small; closeness in even one business unit is a start. Start a weekly or monthly lunch or dinner to start building relationships.
  4. Pay attention to who you are hiring. You want to assess prospective employee’s attitudes as well as aptitudes to see how they are going to fit with the rest of the team.
  5. Get away with the entire group, at least once a year. Focus on business, but focus on bonding too.
  6. Allow for learning and growth.
  7. Have an excellent on-boarding process that makes new employees feel at home and catch a glimpse of the culture.
  8. Celebrate the team as often as possible.
  9. Be authentic. Ultimately, if you are not being yourself in this whole process the group is going to see through that and not take it seriously.

As I mentioned earlier, to be successful you must always be changing for the better. If you haven’t done anything to improve your culture lately, take a minute to think about it. What can you do to make your team more of a team?
